The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) is a non-violent, direct action, social change organization founded nationally in 1957 by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and a group of Southern ministers.
The Greater Kansas City Chapter of SCLC was formally organized in 1972, and is dedicated to the continuation of Dr. King's dream in Metropolitan Kansas City. Since 1969, SCLC of Greater Kansas City has sponsored the annual King Holiday Celebration during January. The Celebration has grown to be one of the most extensive observances in the nation.

On behalf of the SCLC-GKC board, staff, and volunteers, we thank the NAACP, Kansas City Branch for recognizing the leadership ability of our President, Rev. Dr. Vernon Percy Howard, Jr. and presenting him with the Harold L. Holliday, Sr. Civil Rights Award. Over the past 5 years, Dr. Howard has led our civil rights organization to higher levels of justice work and his commitment to advance the Greater Kansas City Community has often come at the sacrifice of his personal and professional goals in furtherance of civil rights. This recognition is truly an honor and we celebrate with NAACP at their 52nd Annual Freedom Fund Banquet!
