“We do know that in this country right now the original sin of racism is causing this nation to implode.
We are calling on the highest levels of the
to intervene and to defend victims of discrimination.
We feel the anger, we feel the pain, we feel the frustration and there is a weariness. And that’s why this kind of social unrest and social upheaval is taking place in our country right now.
Those frustrations are bubbling over.
Now we are able to say to individuals who did not take it seriously. This is what we have been ignoring--racism still exists, and we must stand as a nation together.”

WE HONOR THE WORK & LEGACY OF ONE OF SCLC-GKC's VISIONARY FOUNDERS
THE REV. KENNETH RAY, SR.
October 10, 1932 - May 21, 2020
Our hearts are extended to the Family of Rev. Kenneth Ray, Sr. as we grieve his transition into the presence of our heavenly father. Rev. Ray along with The Rev. Emmanuel Cleaver, II was a visionary and founder of The Southern Christian Leadership of Greater Kansas City. He also was integral in the birth and early years of SCLC-GKC’s development programming including our enduring annual MLK celebration and one of SCLC’s historic trademark programs known as Operation Breadbasket.
In 1983, Rev. Kenneth E. Ray, before participating in the historic civil rights march on Washington in 1983, he along with other activists took the pledge that said, in part: “Standing before the Lincoln Memorial on the 28th day of August in the century year of emancipation, I affirm, my complete, personal commitment to the struggle for jobs and freedom for all Americans. To fulfill that commitment, I pledge that I will not relax until victory is won.” Rev. Ray was relentless in standing up for what was right and diligently addressed any wrong at any opportunity.
In 2016, Rev. Ray received SCLC-GKC’s President’s award which is granted to persons who exemplify the spirit of activism and prophetic courage, justice, peace, and equality. Rev. Ray definitely exemplified this and much more!
Rev. Ray exceptionally served the Christian community. As a Pastor and Man of God, he served the Lord faithfully and loved the church and Lord deeply. His infectious smile, warm spirit, and keen intellectual insight and support for the causes of human and civil rights will be sorely missed.
We mourn with the Ray family and celebrate his life! The Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas City offers its condolences and resources to the Ray family.
Today we honor his work and legacy that he has left us. We offer the words of the Apostle Paul from the book of Romans as we are reminded that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:38-39)
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Rev. Dr. Vernon P. Howard, Jr.
Over the past 5 years,
Dr. Howard has led our civil rights organization to higher levels of justice work and his commitment to advance the Greater Kansas City Community has often come at the sacrifice of his personal and professional goals in furtherance of civil rights.
This recognition is truly an honor and we celebrate with NAACP at their 52nd Annual Freedom Fund Banquet!

SCLC-GKC President's Prophetic Voice, Activism, and Organizing!
We congratulate our president for leading the mobilization efforts in our March and Rally for Peace and Justice in April. We congratulate Dr. Howard for being selected among 51 "Missouri Influencers" by the KC Star newspaper.
Dr. Howard will be helping frame and shape the public conversation around various issues, including economic justice, in articles and commentary in that publication starting now and leading up to the November election. Look for Dr. Howard's prophetic voice in the Star's "Missouri Influencer" series.
